Vince McMahon gave Sonya Deville interesting inspiration for WWE character

Sonya Deville has revealed Vince McMahon’s inspiration behind her authority figure character across Raw and SmackDown.

Since making her return to WWE TV in January 2021 as an assistant to on-screen authority figure Adam Pearce, firstly on SmackDown, but then across both brands as her role became bigger and she was given power to make executive decisions of her own.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Out of Character podcast, Deville revealed that it was WWE Chairman Vince McMahon’s vision for her role to be similar to his daughter Stephanie McMahon.

I’ve gotten a lot of what I do from Stephanie. Looking back on the old Stephanie stuff, I think that is Vince’s kind of vision for me, a Stephanie-esque character.

When I do get in the ring, it’s like yeah, I get in the ring, but I get in the ring as an authority figure. I will use my power how I see fit and how I can to my advantage, and I’ll enjoy doing it because that’s how Steph does and that’s how Vince did. I’ve taken a lot of notes from both of their past work for sure.

As part of her role as the voice of authority on WWE TV, Deville has used her power in recent months to target SmackDown Superstar Naomi. The rivalry has led to Sonya finally making an in-ring return, and most recently faced Ronda Rousey in what was Rousey’s first-ever match on the blue brand.

During the chat with Ryan Satin, the 28-year-old discussed that return, the possibility of competing on a full-time basis once again and how she pitched to be given more mic time on WWE TV.
