Villarreal's Dani Parejo showed no mercy to Bayern Munich in his post-match interview

Villarreal sealed a historic victory in their Champions League quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

A late Samuel Chukwueze goal was enough to earn the visitors a 1-1 draw in Munich, which after defeating Bayern on home turf 1-0, secures them safe passage through to the semi-final.

When the draw came out many people thought Bayern’s progression was a given, Villarreal have only ever qualified for the Champions League on four occasions whilst the German giants have won the competition twice in the last decade.

But football proved once again that you can never discount an underdog. Maybe that’s where Bayern went wrong, they were complacent, dare it be suggested – arrogant?

Dani Parejo certainly seems to think so, speaking to Spanish news outlet ‘Dairio AS’, the playmaker was cutting in his words:

“When the draw happened and Villarreal came out, the manager of Bayern, who I don’t know, I think he lacked respect for us and for football because he wanted to seal the tie in the first leg.

“When you spit in the air, it tends to fall on you.”

Parejo then gave this thoughts on knocking out Juventus and Bayern, two technically ‘bigger’ opponents:

“It’s just that in the end, in football and in life, it holds true for every situation… It’s true that they are Bayern and we are Villarreal. They were favourites, but you have to demonstrate that on the pitch.”
