Vietnam’s Le Duc wins Seventh Lagos International Badminton Classics

Vietnamese star, Le Duc Phat, at the weekend, defeated India’s Samarveer  2-1 (21-10, 18-21, and 22-20) to claim the men’s singles title at the Seventh Lagos International Badminton Classics held at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Le Duc Phat halted India’s bid to sweep all the five gold medals at stake, having claimed four titles before the men’s singles final that climaxed the grand finale.

Gupta Aditya (India) and Vietnam’s Nguyen Hai Dang emerged as joint third-place winners.

The women’s doubles was an all-India affair as Selvam Kavipriya and Singhi Simram outclassed Khadkeda Vaishnavi and Khan Aisha 2-0 (21-11, 21-16 ) to emerge victorious, while the duo of Nigeria’s Adesokan Dorcas Ajoke and Ilorin Aminat Olufunke shared the joint third position with the pair of Ibere Chinenye and Ukeh Uchechukwu Deborah.

With the Indians not done yet, the pair of Kanupuram Sathwik Reddy and Khadkekar Vaishnavi combined effectively to stop Nigeria’s Shehu Aliou and Ukeh Uchechukwu Deborah 21-14, 21-14 to win the mixed doubles gold, while Nigeria’s pair of Musa Momoh/ Yakubu Ramatu and French duo of Mario Julien and Palermo Lea won the joint third position.

Speaking at the end of the competition, Badminton Federation of Nigeria President, Francis Orbih, commended the Lagos State government and the federation’s partners for their support in making the classics a reality.
