Video shows water gushing through ceiling of Manchester Airport terminal during thunderstorm

Water came gushing through the ceiling of one of the terminals at Manchester Airport following tonight's thunderstorms.

The region was struck by lightning and heavy downpours this evening as the hot weather of the past few days came to an abrupt end.

And passengers jetting out from the airport's Terminal 1 were left stunned as water began leaking inside the building during the torrential rain.

Video shared with the Manchester Evening News shows it coming through lights and other fittings on the ceiling near the duty free shops and eateries.

Part of the departure lounge was cordoned off as staff rushed in to try and used buckets to catch the water.

A spokesperson for Manchester Airport said: "“We are aware of a leak in Terminal 1 caused by this afternoon’s extremely heavy rain.

"Our maintenance team is looking at the issue and will fix it as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience.” The airport is not the only major venue in the region to be affected by today's stormy conditions.
