[FILES] WeightliftingChairman of Lagos State Weightlifting Association, Kunle Komolafe, has described the state’s victory at the just-concluded South Weightlifting Championship as a sign that the state is on course with its development efforts. The competition ended at Rowe Park Sports Centre, Yaba, with Lagos beating the other five states to the overall crown.Speaking at the closing ceremony of the event, Komolafe said the championship was a big success that featured a high level of competition.“The championship was exciting as weightlifters in the southwest had the opportunity to compete in various categories.

Some records were broken, which shows the weightlifters are eager to excel in the sport. “Since there is not much awareness of weightlifting in the country, it is important that more championships are organised to expose and motivate lifters from all age grade categories,” he said.Lagos Sports Commission Director General, Oluwatoyin Gafar, in his remarks, commended the state’s weightlifting body for its efforts in developing the sport at the grassroots.“The championship was successful and also interesting, as a large number of lifters in Lagos and other South West states graced the occasion.“The Lagos Sports Commission is delighted that the facilities that were recently donated by the state’s weightlifting association were well utilised at the championship.“We will keep supporting the association and other sports associations in the state.

Getting a gold medalist from the sport in the Commonwealth Games shows that Lagos State is at the forefront of its development,” he said.At the end of the event, Ogun State finished in the second position, while Osun placed third.
