UWCL Final: Lyon upset Barcelona to win eighth Champions League title

Lyon are back on their perch and have regained their status as European title-holders after beating Barcelona in the Champions League final.

The French side produced an inspiring performance in Turin and ran out 3-1 winners over the former champions.

This victory marks Lyon’s eighth Champions League title and extends their astonishing record on the European stage.

It took just six minutes for Lyon to break the deadlock, and once the first goal went in, fans around the world were treated to a stunning battle between the two European heavyweights.

It was midfielder Henry who opened up the scoring with a sensational strike from outside the area. The 32-year-old picked up a loose ball more than 25-yards out and pulled the trigger, sending her shot rifling into the top corner.

Henry’s composure and confidence marked a huge moment for her club, who made it clear they were not leaving the Juventus Stadium without taking their crown back.

Barcelona, clearly rocked from the quick opener, struggled to deal with Lyon’s pressure and found themselves once again at the mercy of the resilient French attack.

Ada Hegerberg doubled the lead in the 23rd minute, adding to her impressive run of form since she returned from injury in October 2021. The Norwegian was sidelined for 21 months after suffering an ACL injury back in January 2020.

Lyon’s failure to pick up a single trophy during the 2020/21 season showed how crucial Hegerberg is to the team. Not only did they relinquish their European champion status, but they lost the league for the first time in 14 years.

Her return has been gargantuan for Lyon and she played a huge role in toppling the almighty Barcelona in Turin.

Catarina Macario added another goal to the tally ten minutes
