Nigerian sprinter Favour Oghene Tejiri Ashe has been arrested in the United States (US) on multiple theft and fraud charges.

Ashe, a student-athlete, was arrested on Friday, February 9, by Auburn police on charges including four counts of fraudulent use of a debit/credit card and two counts of theft of property.

The allegations suggest he stole several items, including a credit card, and used it for unauthorised transactions.

Auburn Police said in a statement that they first received a theft report on February 4th when a victim reported that multiple items had been stolen from a purse near the 100 block of West Magnolia Avenue.

A credit card was among the items stolen, and the victim discovered several fraudulent charges were made using the stolen card, according to the police

Ashe is currently being held at the Lee County Jail on a $9,000 bond as he awaits his court date.

Ashe, who won a bronze medal in the 4x100m relay for Nigeria at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, recently transferred from the University of Tennessee to Auburn University in Alabama, where he has been representing the NCAA.
