US Open: Anett Kontaveit leaves presser in tears after Serena Williams defeat

Estonian star Anett Kontaveit left her press conference in tears, following her defeat against Serena Williams at the US Open.

Kontaveit, who was seeded second for the event, lost to the 23-time major winner in three sets –– ending her hopes of a first-ever Grand Slam title.

Throughout the match, the partizan crowd almost entirely supported Williams and Kontaveit did well to cope with almost 30,000 people cheering for her opponent.

Speaking afterwards, Kontaveit was diplomatic about the crowd, gracious in defeat and satisfied with her performance overall.

Yet, one question in Estonian caused the world number two to become visibly emotional and proved too much for the tennis star to take in the end.

While Kontaveit dealt with all questions in English with class and eloquence, the first question to be asked in Estonian prompted her to start welling up.

The 26-year-old was unable to continue the press conference and proceeded to leave as she wiped tears from her face.

Tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg tweeted that he was unsure what had been said or how Kontaveit had answered, but the reporter in question responded by clarifying what he had asked.
