Uruguay 1-0 Peru: Controversy over visitors' goal that wasn't given
Uruguay booked their place at the 2022 World Cup in the early hours of Friday morning UK time.
Their 1-0 victory at home over Peru thanks to a goal from Giorgian de Arrascaeta in first half stoppage-time was enough to secure a top four spot in CONMEBOL qualifying.
Uruguay are now four points clear of Peru in fifth-place with just one game left to play, which means that gap cannot be bridged.
The latest meeting between the two nations was certainly not controversy free, though.
In second half stoppage-time, Peru thought they had scored a dramatic late equaliser when goalkeeper Sergio Rochet looked as if he had carried the ball over the line.
The Nacional shot-stopper ended up halfway inside his own goal and to the naked eye, it appeared a rather comical blunder had been made by him.
But despite VAR being in place, the goal wasn’t given and it’s fair to say many football fans were baffled by that outcome – especially after seeing footage and still photos of the incident.
