Update shared after Nottingham Forest linked with transfer swoop for Cardiff City player

Nottingham Forest are not interested in signing Alex Smithies in the summer.

You will all be SHOCKED to hear that there is absolutely nothing in the rumours linking Alex Smithies to Nottingham Forest.

The current Cardiff City keeper is out of contract with the Bluebirds at the end of the current campaign, so it’s perhaps no surprise that there is plenty of speculation surrounding his future.

And, it had been suggested that the stopper could secure a switch to the City Ground. However, reporter Will Unwin insists that won’t happen, as he made it clear that Forest are not interested in the 32-year-old.

“There is absolutely nothing in the rumours linking Alex Smithies to Nottingham Forest.”

In truth, that is perhaps not a surprise as the Reds are well-stocked in the goalkeeping department, with Brice Samba having been the number one for most of the season, when he has generally done well.

But, Samba did lose his place recently, with Ethan Horvath stepping in and doing well, whilst third-choice keeper Jordan Smith signed a contract extension at the club last month.

Smithies has played 29 times for Cardiff this season, although it’s unclear whether he will be offered a new deal.

The verdict

This was a surprising link given the fact that Forest have two good Championship standard keepers already, and a reliable third option in Smith.

So, bringing in someone like Smithies would have been baffling because even though he is a good keeper, he’s not an upgrade on what they currently have.

If Forest do go up, they may look to bring in an upgrade on Samba but if they stay in the Championship, they are sorted, and fans would want other areas of the squad addressed in the summer.
