Uno defends crown while Chock and Bates make history

Shoma Uno defended his World Championship crown to the delight of his adoring fans in Saitama. The Japanese ace led the men's standings after Thursday's short programme and his free skate routine to Air on the G String, which included five quad attempts, was enough for him to secure top spot in the podium.

Ad Cha Jun-Hwan took silver to become the first South Korean man to win a World Championship medal while Ilia Malinin took bronze after attempting a particularly challenging routine with six quads including a quad Axel, which he landed. The duo, aged 30 and 34 respectively, triumphed in the ice dance to become the oldest ever World Championship gold medallists and land them a long-awaited success having previously finished elsewhere on the podium on three occasions. «We wouldn't be sitting here today without many of those challenges that we faced, not just this season, but through all the many seasons of our career,†Chock said.

Charlène Guignard and Marco Fabbri earned silver for Italy, with Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier taking bronze ahead of Great Britain's Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson, who achieved their best ever World Championship result.
