Union Bears Rangers banner ban sums up disconnect between the board and Ibrox faithful - Hotline

Gary Lineker wasn’t the only one on mute over the weekend after attempting to voice controversial opinions.

The Union Bears ended up silencing themselves after being told they would not be allowed to display a “highly-offensive” banner targeting police chiefs during Rangers’ Scottish Cup with Raith Rovers. The ultras no-show resulted in an eerie atmosphere round Ibrox but Hotline callers were split over who is at fault.

Gareth Friel, Edinburgh, said: “The Union Bears create all the atmosphere in Ibrox, without them it would be completely silent most weeks.They always have numerous banners now all of a sudden they're not allowed to voice their opinion. Sums up the disconnect between the board and the fans right now.” But Grant Park said: “The game against Raith Rovers wasn't exactly great, but it was an absolute joy not having to listen to the weekly bile that issues from the group calling themselves the Union Bears. Personally, I hope that they continue to boycott Rangers games. I would also remove their season tickets and ban them for life. I have supported Rangers since 1962 and I cannot remember a group that has ever been so vile.”

It was a low-key display from Michael Beale’s side but Alfie Mullin, London, said: “Well, that's the Scottish Cup in the bag. Rangers must be confident about retaining the old trophy. The only opposition left are three diddy teams.”

The Celtic support have a different take on things and reckon that now that Ange Postecoglou’s side has done the double over Hearts they are on course for a treble. Seamus Gallagher, Govan, emailed in: “Yet again Celtic did their talking on the park with a comprehensive demolition of the Jambos. No doubting now, the treble is on.”
