'Unbelievable' - Jody Morris blown away by three Chelsea stars in Lille win

Former assistant manager Jody Morris heaped praise on three ‘unbelievable’ Chelsea stars after Thomas Tuchel’s side beat Lille in the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie.

Champions League holders Chelsea have one foot in the quarter-finals after goals from Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic secured a 2-0 win over French champions Lille at Stamford Bridge.

Morris, who was Frank Lampard’s assistant at Chelsea, told BBC Radio 5 Live: ‘They were extremely solid, especially in the second half. They totally controlled the game.’

The ex-Blues coach reserved special praise for defender Thiago Silva, midfielder N’Golo Kante and forward Havertz.

Brazilian veteran Silva produced another superb performance to thwart Lille in west London, while French World Cup winner Kante was at his brilliant best, taking home the Player of the Match award.

Germany international Havertz also made a big impact for Chelsea, impressing in a more central attacking role after Tuchel opted to bench club-record signing Romelu Lukaku.

Morris added: ‘Thiago Silva was unbelievable – it does not seem like he is getting older one bit.

‘Kai Havertz, you have to give the manager credit for picking him and Havertz had one of his best games in a Chelsea shirt. N’Golo Kante was his world-class best too.

‘Lille didn’t threaten enough and when they got close to the Chelsea goal ran into a brick wall.

‘It was a really accomplished performance from Chelsea. The clean sheet is huge at home. With the games they have to catch up in with the league it may allow them to rotate the squad even more.

‘It should’ve been more, that’s the only disappointment that Thomas Tuchel will have, but you can’t really moan about a 2-0 win in the last 16.
