Ulster U20: Cavan ease past Monaghan, Antrim push Derry

Cavan turned in a sensational display as they dumped Monaghan out of the Ulster U20 Football Championship following an 11-point quarter-final win in Inniskeen.

Damien Donohoe's side were far too good for a Farney outfit that had beaten them in a league match a few weeks ago, holding them to just three scores in a 1-11 to 0-03 victory.

The Breffni County made the perfect start as Darragh Lovett grabbed a goal after five minutes and they hit five of the next six points to lead 1-05 to 0-01 at the break – Ronan Boyle with the home side’s only score of the opening period.

Lovett once again opened the scoring in the second half, this time with a point, and Eoghan Hartin and Tiarnan Madden quickly added scores to put the game beyond Monaghan.

Tiarnan Kearns and Stephen Mooney did raise white flags for Monaghan in the second half, but they were never in contention with their misery compounded by Eoin Duffy’s late dismissal.

Antrim pushed Derry all the way before the Oakleaf County came out on top 0-12 to 0-09 at Owenbeg.

The sides were level at the break, 0-05 to 0-05, but it could have been better for the Saffrons as Sean O’Neill’s effort at goal saved by Kian McGonigle with the Antrim player fisting the rebound over the bar.

The third quarter was score for score with Antrim moving 0-09 to 0-08 ahead thanks to an Aidan McAleese score, but Derry kicked the last four points to reach the semi-final - Ryan McEldowney, Charlie Diamond [two] and Lachlan Murray on target.

Donegal were far too strong for Armagh as they earned a 1-13 to 0-09 win in Ballybofey.

The hosts did the damage in the first half as Luke McGlynn’s goal, the first score of the game, sent them on their way to a 1-07 to 0-01 interval lead.
