Ukraine international Roman Yaremchuk moved to tears by Benfica supporters’ ovation

Ukraine striker Roman Yaremchuk was moved to tears after being subbed on during the second half of Benfica’s clash against Vitoria Guimaraes on Sunday.

Benfica were 3-0 up when manager Nelson Verissimo sent on Yaremchuk to replace Darwin Nunez, who netted a brace.

Yaremchuk was handed the captain’s armband from Jan Vertonghen before receiving an incredible standing ovation from fans inside the Estadio da Luz.

Some fans held up Ukraine flags and anti-war signs and the overwhelming support moved Yaremchuk to tears.

Yaremchuk, who has scored 12 goals in 36 appearances for his national team, joined Benfica from Gent last summer.

In 31 appearances for the Portuguese outfit, the 26-year-old has scored eight times.

The wave of support from the Benfica fans clearly meant a huge amount to the Ukrainian, whose country is currently involved in armed conflict with Russia following a large-scale invasion.

There were similar scenes in England on Saturday evening when Manchester City and Everton met at Goodison Park.

Yaremchuk’s international teammate Oleksandr Zinchenko was moved to tears as both Premier League teams showed their support for Ukraine and its citizens.
