Ukraine beat Scotland to play Wales in World Cup play-off final

Wales will face Ukraine in the World Cup play-off final.

Rob Page's men booked their place in the final by beating Austria 2-1 in March. And their opponents for Sunday's showpiece have now been confirmed after Scotland were defeated 3-1 by the Ukrainians at Hampden Park on Wednesday night.

Andriy Yarmolenko - who was released by West Ham United last week - netted the opener shortly after the half hour mark, with Roman Yaremchuk heading home early on in the second-half. Steve Clarke's men pushed late on and pulled a goal back through substitute Stuart Armstrong, but Artem Dovbyk netter on the counter attack in added time to spark pandemonium among the travelling supporters.

The semi-final fixture in Glasgow was originally scheduled to take place in March on the same night as Wales' victory over Austria, although it was postponed owing to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. With their place in the final already confirmed, Wales warmed up for the match in the Welsh capital with a clash against Poland.

Jonny Williams fired the visitors ahead in Wales' 2022/23 Nations League opener, but goals from Jakub Kaminski and Karol Swiderski earned the hosts all three points. Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen, Joe Rodon and Ben Davies were all rested for the game in Wroclaw but are poised to start against Ukraine.

Kick-off at Cardiff City Stadium is at 5pm on Sunday. The winner will book their place at this year's World Cup in Qatar.
