UK holidaymaker's warning as he has fingers amputated after horror incident in Ibiza

A British man has issued a warning to holidaymakers heading to Ibiza after a severe reaction to a spider bite resulted in him having parts of his fingers amputated.

Tom Bush, from Merthyr Tydfil, was living the dream of many 19-year-olds, two months into a summer break with friends, enjoying drinks and soaking up the sun along the San Antonio coastline. However, his idyllic getaway took a sudden turn for the worse on July 1, 2021.

The relaxed evening began as usual, with Tom and his friends heading down to watch the sunset near Cafe Mambo. "I think I had my hand on the rocks and I felt a little prick at the time, nothing major," Tom shared with The Mirror. "I then went out for a few more drinks during the night and was in bed by 11pm."

As the hours passed, it became apparent that the minor prick was actually something far more serious, reports the Mirror. Tom recalls waking up in the middle of the night in excruciating pain.

"I woke up at 4am and it felt like my hand was on fire. I really started to panic, my hand was really swollen and blue. I woke my friends up and they were nervous and panicked too and we went to the pharmacist as soon as it opened and they were like, 'you need to get to a hospital straight away.'

"They didn't really know what was happening, because it is so rare. They just wanted to take extra precautions and preserve as much of my hand as possible."

While Tom's experience is a rare and unfortunate one, tourists sometimes endure serious health scares due to venomous spider bites in Spain. A French tourist had a severe response to a bite while holidaying in the country, leading to an intense allergic reaction.
