UFC 280: Dana White confirms Alexander Volkanovski will get next lightweight title shot

UFC president Dana White has confirmed that Alexander Volkanovski will fight the winner of the UFC 280 main event for the lightweight title.

At this moment in time, Alexander Volkanovski is widely considered to be the best pound for pound fighter in the world.

The featherweight king recently saw off the challenge of Max Holloway for the third time and did so fairly emphatically, cementing his leap above Kamaru Usman in the P4P rankings.

Now, he seems to have his sights set on earning a second world title at a higher weight class, which makes sense, given that he’s wiped out most of his division at 145 pounds.

He’ll be travelling to Abu Dhabi this week in order to serve as the back-up fighter for the UFC lightweight championship collision between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev. While everyone hopes that contest goes ahead, it’s nice to know that ‘The Great’ has the potential to create a short notice superfight if the situation arises.

As it turns out, though, even if Volkanovski’s services are not required, Dana White is still interested in giving him a crack at immortality.

During a recent interview, White was asked directly about the prospect of Volkanovski getting a shot at the UFC 280 winner.

“Well it makes sense [Volkanovski getting the fight]. Yeah, it makes sense.”

The boss said the same thing regarding the impending match-up between Petr Yan and Sean O’Malley at bantamweight.

Volkanovski hasn’t been shy about wanting to completely clean out the featherweight division and as we’ve already noted, he’s done that pretty well given that he’s beaten Holloway three times, Chan Sung
