UFC 274: Justin Gaethje put on big amount of weight as Charles Oliveira missed cut

There was drama at the weigh-in ahead of Saturday’s main event fight at UFC 274 between Justin Gaethje (23-3) and Charles Oliveira (32-8) last night.

Gaethje, the challenger, made the 155-pound limit, but the current lightweight champion Oliveira tipped the scales half a pound over the limit.

He was then given one hour to lose that weight, but he couldn’t, meaning he had to vacate the title.

This means that regardless of the result of Saturday’s fight, Oliveira will not be the lightweight champion. Either Gaethje will be the new title holder, or the belt will remain vacant.

This has never happened before in the history of the UFC, and it is highly embarrassing for the fighter, who remained convinced throughout that he had made weight and the scales were faulty.

Oliveira and his team have been arguing that they made the weight on the scales back at the hotel prior to the official weigh-in, and that the scales used weren’t working correctly.

There isn’t much sympathy to be found for the Brazilian, however, and certainly not from his opponent.

As you can see from this Twitter post, Gaethje is gloating that he has made weight and subsequently piled on 10 pounds in short order. The American has clearly managed to time his weight cut just right, whilst Oliveira has been embarrassed on the biggest stage and with real financial consequences to him down the road.
