UFC 271: Marcelo Rojo gruesome injury after taking relentless leg kicks

The official UFC Twitter account shared a photo last night of Marcelo Rojo’s shin that shows just how brutal leg kicks can be.

Kyler Phillips and Marcelo Rojo competed on the preliminary card of UFC 271 in the early hours of Sunday morning in a bantamweight bout at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Phillips began the fight as he meant to go on, throwing razor sharp leg kicks at Rojo, who seemed to make little attempt to block the blows.

As later proven by the official UFC data, which found that Phillips threw a total of 14 leg kicks in the fight and landed 100% of them.

Needless to say, Rojo’s left leg took some serious damage and was pretty chewed up by the end of the fight.

As can be seen in this horrific close-up posted by the UFC after the bout, captioned: “Rojo’s left leg has taken a BEATING.”

Surprisingly, it wasn’t the leg kicks that caused a stoppage, but rather a submission attempt, as Phillips locked in a triangular arm bar in the third round and left his rival no choice but to tap.

Overall, it was an impressive display from Phillips, landing 90 out of 176 strikes and scoring three takedowns.

The 26-year-old now boasts a record of 10-2 in the UFC, with five wins coming via knockout, three via submission and two via decision.

“In that third round I strung together some good submissions,” said Phillips in his post-fight interview.

“I was happy, in that moment, I had some fun but there’s things I have to work on, tightening things up, and keep training to get better.”

Phillips is rising quite rapidly through the bantamweight rankings and wants to get back into the Octagon in the “next couple of months” to continue his progression towards a top 10 spot.

Whoever he does fight next will have to make sure
