UEFA Regions Cup: North Wales XI to face Czech Republic and Sweden after victory over Cymru South

A football team representing North Wales will now go on to play in the UEFA Regions Cup later this year after overcoming their southern counterparts. The Cymru North side, containing players from the second-tier Cymru North league and below, overcame the Cymru South side 4-2 at Briton Ferry FC on Sunday after drawing 0-0 at Denbigh Town's Central Park the week before.

The side, managed by former Corwen FC boss Guy Handscombe, will now head to Northern Ireland in October to take on the hosts as well as Sweden and the Czech Republic. The tournament will take place between 10-16 October.

The UEFA Regions Cup is a competition for players who have never featured at a professional level. As such the team chosen to represent the Cymru North was unable to contain any players who have previously been under contract at a club.

The hosts raced into a 2-0 lead at Briton Ferry before the Gogs brought the game back level with goals from Liam Morris and Jamie Cumming. Cymru North then sealed the win thanks to strikes from Dylan Allshorn and Jake Cooke.

Cymru North manager Handscombe was overjoyed with his side's performance against their southern counterparts. Many had tipped the Cymru South team to triumph as they had several players from the Cymru South top two, Llantwit Major and Pontypridd amongst their ranks.

Handscombe said: "I think some people looked at their team and thought that with them having several players from the top two in the Cymru South that they would be strong favourites."

"The players have been an absolute credit to themselves and their clubs. They put a brilliant shift in during the first game (0-0 at Denbigh Town's Central Park).

"It took the lads a while to get into the second game but I don't think being 1-0
