UEFA issue statement after Cristiano Ronaldo security incident as Portugal make safety plea

UEFA has confirmed that security will be ramped up for the remaining Euro 2024 games after Portugal's 3-0 win over Turkey was disrupted by five pitch invaders - one of whom managed to sneak a photo with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes scored either side of an own goal from Samet Akaydin to secure Portugal's passage into the knockout stages of the competition as group winners. However, the Group F encounter at Borussia Dortmund's Signal Idunna Park was interrupted by pitch invaders who bypassed pitch-side security and made their way onto the field of play.

One of those was a 10-year-old fan named Berat, who took a selfie with former Manchester United man Ronaldo. The 39-year-old five-time Ballon d'Or winner was all smiles as the young fan made his way onto the pitch, but UEFA has warned that the competition's security will be heightened in the aftermath of the incident.

In a statement released to Sky News after Saturday's game, UEFA said: "Safety and security in the stadium, on the pitch and at team facilities are the ultimate priority for UEFA, DFB and EURO 2024 GmbH.

"To this end, additional safety measures will be deployed in the stadiums to further meet the requirements of the tournament and to prevent such incidents. For reasons of security, we cannot comment further on specific measures.

"As a reminder, any incursion onto the pitch constitutes a breach of the stadium rules and will result in expulsion from the stadium, a ban from all tournament matches and the filing of a formal criminal complaint for trespass."
