Tyson Fury gives passionate speech about why money won't lure him out of retirement

Tyson Fury retained his WBO title on Saturday night, defeating Dillian Whyte in what he claimed to be his curtain call.

A legion of 94,000 fans took to Wembley Stadium to see Fury stop Whyte in the sixth round – a win that sees the champion take home a reported £21.5 million in prize money.

The clinical nature of victory only raised more questions over the two-time world heavyweight champion’s decision to hang up his gloves.

Fighters who command such interest are few and far between, so Fury’s retirement certainly looks to be a promoter’s nightmare.

The question was put to the Mancunian in his post-fight press conference and he was quick to distance himself from a comeback for financial reward.

“There’s a lot of money to be earned,” Fury admitted. “But for me, I come from f*** all, I come from nothing. It’s never been about money. I’m not a money person.

“I enjoy boxing, I was good at it and I’ve been paid for it. But it’s not the be-all and end-all. I could end up in a council flat at any time, don’t worry about that.”

Fury credited his competitive edge as his sole motivator for boxing at the highest level.

“It’s not even been about belts for me, it’s not been about legacies. It’s not been about anything apart from punching a m*****f*****’s face right in on the night… All I ever want to do is win.”

Whether or not the boxing faithful is treated to another Tyson Fury display is yet to be seen. However, in a sport that’s so often dominated by deals and outlandish figures, Fury has been a breath of fresh air – an authentic athlete who only ever competed for the love of the game.
