Two South Africans now serve the FIA after Willem Groenewald's appointment to Secretary General

Another South African, Willem Groenewald, has joined the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) in a prominent role. Having served the Automobile Association of South Africa, Groenewald will now take up the position as the new Secretary General for Automobile Mobility and Tourism.

Groenewald has been the AA's CEO since 2019.

Another South African, Anton Roux, the chairperson of Motorsport South Africa (MSA), was appointed to the Senate of the FIA earlier this year.

CEO Natalie Robyn, to whom Groenewald will report directly, said: "Willem's experience will be a big benefit to our Federation, and exemplifies our Club focused mentality. I look forward to working with him to implement our ambitious strategy to make mobility safe, affordable, sustainable, and accessible for all."

Groenewald said of his appointment: "To be involved in an organisation such as the FIA is a rare opportunity. I see my role as serving the FIA, its Members, and the wider community of citizens throughout the world that benefit from the FIA's continued dedication to improving mobility and tourism.

"I am also proud to represent Africa and South Africa at the highest echelons in the FIA and believe this is indicative of the FIA's commitment to reflect the composition of the clubs its serves, and which again underscores the FIA's goal of improving mobility and tourism on a global scale."
