However, getting the timing just right is key, as avocados need to be perfectly ripe to reach their full flavour. An avocado that is too hard can be disappointing and difficult to eat, while being overripe leads to brown or bruised flesh and a distinctly mushy consistency.
One TikTok hack is helping Brits discover how ripe their avocado is without even having to break the skin or squeeze it in the supermarket.
A TikTok account called MummyLifeSquad has shared a video suggesting that you don't have to cut or even squeeze your avocado to see if it is good to go.
They explain that you can get an indication of an avocado's ripeness by pinching off the cap (the small stem at the top). The TikTok content creator said: "If it's white then it's rotten." She then cut the avocado in half to show the inside of the avocado, which was rotten, reports the Express.
If the cap is difficult to remove or exposes brown or blackened flesh underneath, the avocado is probably overripe and very likely about to go brown and mushy.
However, if the cap comes off easily and reveals bright green flesh underneath, the avocado is likely ripe.
