Two people killed in Merseyside and London as Storm Eunice leads to tragedy

Two people have been killed during high winds as Storm Eunice batters parts of the UK.

A woman has died after a tree fell onto a car in London, and a man was pronounced dead in Merseyside after debris hit the windscreen of a vehicle.

Strong winds have caused disruption and damage across the country, and now Storm Eunice has led to tragedy.

Merseyside Police said that a man in his 50s, a passenger in the car, died after debris had struck the windscreen in Netherton, just after 2pm.

Sergeant Amy Murray said: “This is a very tragic incident and our sympathies go out to the family and friends of the passenger and anyone else who has been affected."

In London, police said that a woman in her 30s, also a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead after a tree fell on the vehicle.

The driver, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

"Police were called shortly after 4pm on Friday, February 18, to reports of a tree fallen on a car in Muswell Hill Road near the junction with South Close, N6," the Metropolitan police said.

"Officers attended along with colleagues from London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade.

"The passenger in the car – a woman aged in her 30s - was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers believe they know the woman’s identity and her family have been informed. They will be supported by specialist officers."
