Two more thugs jailed after Curry Mile violence ended in beloved man's killing

Two more men have been jailed following the killing of a 'dearly loved' student doctor, struck down by a single with single punch while he was acting as a peacemaker during a violent attack.

The two men have been jailed for 18 months for their roles in a 'violent disorder' on Curry Mile, which led to the death of the 33-year-old student doctor, Emmanuel Simon. Their prison sentences follow the conviction of doorman Nojan Kafi, who was jailed for four-and-a-half years in 2022 for killing Emmanuel in 2020.

Emmanuel had moved from Eritrea in Africa to Manchester to study to become a doctor. In the early hours of Sunday, January 26, he visited Dubai Café in Wilmslow Road, Rusholme, with friends following a wedding celebration.

At around 5am that morning, a disturbance broke out inside the café which spilled out onto Wilmslow Road, according to Greater Manchester Police (GMP). Some of the group had been allowed in, while others had been refused entry with the group heading back out onto the street, heard Manchester Crown Court during Kafi's case.

Emmanuel had his arms raised in a 'peaceful gesture', the court heard, when Kafi pushed and tripped another man before walking up and punching the student doctor once in the jaw - knocking him to the ground where he hit his head and fell unconscious immediately.

The punch sparked a mass brawl in the street, the Manchester Evening News has previously reported, with Kafi quickly rushing to his victim’s side and putting him into the recovery position.
