Two hits and one flop - rating Erik ten Hag's Manchester United signings who played in the Netherlands

Tyrell Malacia

The first signing of the Erik ten Hag era, Malacia was the only newbie on United's pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia last year but stood out in the penultimate friendly against Atletico Madrid in Oslo.

Established left-back Luke Shaw still started the season but lasted three halves, hooked at the interval of the shambolic surrender at Brentford. Malacia lined up in the next eight games and was outstanding on his full debut against Liverpool as United recovered from two defeats to embark on a run of four successive Premier League wins.

However, Malacia was vulnerable against Bukayo Saka in the 3-1 triumph over Arsenal and he was mercilessly exposed by Phil Foden in the first Manchester derby of the season at the Etihad. Malacia made way at the interval in the next game against Omonia Nicosia with United trailing 1-0.

Shaw never looked back and was arguably the standout left-back in England last term. Malacia, 23, started a creditable 29 games but he is a work in progress and very much a squad player. The Dutchman was named on the teamsheet in all but one of United's 62 matches and was only absent for the league win at Nottingham Forest with a sore knee.
