Two forgotten Manchester United players can give Erik ten Hag wildcard winger options

As Erik ten Hag begins to look at his squad this summer, there will be no shortage of areas that need addressing in one way or another.

The recently-ended season has thrown up no end of problems that need urgent attention at Manchester United. What looked to be a side ready to mount a proper title challenge at the start of the season has been horribly exposed by the most disastrous of campaigns.

For the club’s new manager, it will be difficult to know exactly where to start. When he looks across his side, he’ll see plenty of positions that are in need of bolstering, and he clearly already has a vision for some of those.

Frenkie de Jong and Jurrien Timber – two familiar faces for Ten Hag from his time at Ajax – have been identified as ideal options for the midfield and defence, which have been problem areas for some time. But there is another area which needs to be addressed.

There have been plenty of attempts to sort the issue that has arisen on the right wing, but thus far none have truly solved it. Jadon Sancho was brought in to become United’s next star in that position, but he’s ended up gravitating towards the left.

The problem was exacerbated by the expulsion of Mason Greenwood. Since then, Marcus Rashford has been unable to rediscover his form on that side, and while Anthony Elanga has performed admirably, too much expectation has been placed on his young shoulders.

The young Swede will get some much-needed time away to recover before he returns to action in pre-season. He’ll be joined then by two of his erstwhile academy teammates, who could prove to be wildcard options for Ten Hag.
