Two arrested after man, 57, killed 'trying to stop his car from being stolen'

Two suspects have been arrested after a 57-year-old man was killed in east Manchester after 'trying to stop his car from being stolen'.

The victim was pronounced dead by emergency services at the scene on Olympic Street, Beswick, at around 10.54am on Saturday (March 16). Greater Manchester Police had been called to reports of an unresponsive man.

A murder probe was launched, with a scene remaining in place throughout the day amid fast-paced investigations. CSI officers were taking images of the scene as detectives made door-to-door enquires and evidence markers were placed in the road. Police said early enquiries suggested the victim had been hit by a Land Rover, understood to have been his own car.

The force has now said that initial enquiries indicate that the victim was killed whilst trying to stop his car from being stolen.

Greater Manchester Police have since confirmed that a 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and a 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both remain in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Smith from GMP Major Incident Team said: “At the centre of this investigation, is a grieving family, who we will do all we can to get answers for.

“Our investigation is moving at pace, and I have a team of detectives who continue to work relentlessly to capture a picture of what happened in the events leading up to this incident.

"Additional officers remain in the area to offer reassurance to the local community. If you have any questions, or want to share any information, please speak to them. They are there for you and any detail, no matter how
