Turkish ref attack sees football SHUT DOWN as police hunt Ankaragucu president for post match punch
The president of a Turkish club who PUNCHED a referee after a Super Lig game is now a wanted man after police issued an arrest warrant.
Ankaragucu chief Faruk Koca thumped whistler Halil Umut Meler after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Rizespor. The game saw the visitors hit a dramatic leveller in the 97th minute after both sides had been reduced to ten men. A furious Koca, in full view of the cameras, stormed onto the pitch to confront Meler before punching him in the face. Another individual then booted the official as he lay on the ground trying to protect himself.
He is now recovering in hospital as the fallout from the shocking incident is felt across the game in Turkey. ALL football has been shut down in the aftermath following an emergency meeting to discuss violence. FIFA chief Gianni Infantino has also hit out at the scenes which unfolded.
He said: “There is absolutely no place for violence in football, on or off the field. It is totally unacceptable and has no place in our sport or society.
"Without match officials there is no football. Referees, players, fans and staff have to be safe and secure to enjoy the game, and I call on the relevant authorities to ensure that this is strictly implemented and respected at all levels.”
Controversial Turkish president Recep Erdogan has also spoken out. He added: “I condemn the attack on referee Halil Umut Meler after the MKE Ankaragucu-Çaykur Rizespor match played this evening, and I wish him a speedy recovery.
"Sports means peace and brotherhood. Sport is incompatible with violence. We will never allow violence to take place in Turkish sports.”
