Trio of world titles for Dumbarton kickboxing star Maia Bisley in Hungary

Dumbarton’s Maia Bisley starred on the global stage - lifting three titles and being named female fighter of the tournament at the World Kickboxing Championships in Budapest.

The 14-year-old, who trains at Braveheart Martial Arts in Glasgow, took gold in the points, kick-light and light-contact competitions - as well as helping GB to bronze in the teams event.

And a terrific tournament was rounded off when she was named tatami female fighter of the event, as well being recognised as finals athlete of the day by the referees.

Proud mum Kim told the Lennox: “I was pretty speechless as it was such an emotional time for us. Her dad, Stewart, and I - and her family and friends - are incredibly proud of her achievement at this competition.

“Winning three golds at World Championship level is extraordinary and it speaks volumes about her dedication, hard work, and talent.

“She is relentless in her pursuit to be the best and has been from a young age. Her determination and help from her coaches and her teammates have enabled this success, not to take away from the tremendous effort on Maia’s part.

“We knew that the points final with Greece would be a big challenge because she was fighting one of her friends from Greece who she trains with when there is a Greek camp.

“Although they are friends, both of them were determined to win it.

“She had beaten Maia earlier this year and Maia wanted to beat her this time. We expected it to be really close but Maia was incredible. She went four points ahead within about 30 seconds and scored a couple of head kicks, so the fight was stopped 30 seconds early in the second round because she was 10 points clear.”

Despite the achievement, Dumbarton Academy pupil Maia is taking it all in her stride.
