Tributes pour in for 'total legend' Tina Turner

Tributes have flooded in for Tina Turner after she passed away on Wednesday.

"The 'Queen of Rock'n Roll' has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness," a statement from her spokesperson read. "With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model."

She died at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, according to her manager. She became a Swiss citizen a decade ago.

Celebrities and fans the world over paid tribute to Turner, with Beyoncé calling her the "epitome of passion and power".

The late performer - who began life as a farmer's daughter - was praised by many for overcoming years of domestic abuse, while helping and inspiring fellow survivors.

Turner was one of the best-loved female rock singers known for her on-stage charisma and a string of hits, selling more than 180 million albums worldwide in a career spanning seven decades.

The performer teamed with husband Ike Turner for a dynamic run of hit records and live shows in the 1960s and ’70s, before triumphing in middle age with the chart-topping “What’s Love Got to Do With It."

Turner was among the first celebrities to speak openly about the domestic abuse she suffered during her marriage to Ike.

Her chart success came after their divorce in 1978, with many songs referring to her escape.

Women's Aid, a charity, heaped praise on the US singer: "She will always be simply the best."

Turner had a powerful voice and stage presence, earning her the title Queen of Rock and Roll. Such energy and passion were a delight to fans at her concerts, who always came away impressed.

She won eight Grammy Awards and was placed in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2021 as a solo artist. Previously she had been there alongside her ex-husband Ike.
