Tributes after serving Greater Manchester firefighter dies

The death of a serving firefighter in Greater Manchester has been announced. Tributes are being paid to Francois Childs, who was based at Broughton fire station in Salford.

Known to colleagues as Frankie, he was a member of the station's Green Watch and is said to have died on Tuesday whilst at home. He's not believed to have been on duty at the time. His death was announced 'with great sadness' by the Greater Manchester branch of the Fire Brigades Union late last night - Tuesday.

"We are incredibly sad to announce the death in service of Brother Francois Childs who served on Green Watch at Broughton Fire Station," said the FBU in a post on x, formerly Twitter.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and colleagues - RIP Frankie." No further details have been immediately shared.

The FBU said in a posted statement: "It is with great sadness we report the death in service of Brother Francois Childs, firefighter on Green Watch, Broughton. Bro. Childs passed away earlier today whilst at home.

"Everybody in the FBU sends Francois's family, friends, and colleagues our condolences, solidarity and support at this very sad time. FBU officials at local and national level are liaising to ensure all necessary steps are taken to provide support to family and colleagues."

Tributes are being paid to Mr Childs by those who knew him on social media. One tribute on Facebook read: "Incredibly sad news. Great fella and a pleasure to work with. Sincere condolences to his family and Broughton green watch and station. RIP Frankie.x"
