Be it seven games into a new season, on the eve of Christmas, or after reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League, Thomas Tuchel usually follows a relatively consistent pattern. As Manchester United consider him as a possible next managerial appointment, this much is clear.

He has won 11 honours as a coach, including UEFA's best individual award in 2021 as well. Across his last three jobs though, a similar pattern has emerged. Tuchel does not appear to leave with things in a better state than when he started, even if there are trophies on the table in the meantime.

He has also picked some of the tougher sides during his managerial journey. Paris Saint-Germain may be moving towards a less Galactico-like approach but under Tuchel were using Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and Neymar all in the same side.

He fell out with directors there before correcting those mistakes at Chelsea, briefly. Within 18 months he had grown fed up of being the public figure for everything at Stamford Bridge and never clicked under a new ownership group (then again, who has?) Bayern Munich were going through a chaotic time when he arrived as well.

The case with Tuchel is that at his best he is a tremendous coach who knows what he wants, usually gets it, and then often delivers with success. The trade-off is that there has so far been a pretty defined timeframe to this at an elite level with things tailing off within less than two years.
