Tragedy as person hit by train dies on railway track

British Transport Police are investigating after a person who was hit by a train sadly died on a railway line in Cheshire on Friday night, it's been confirmed.

Emergency services were called to Congleton railway station, on the Stafford to Manchester branch of the West Coast Main Line, at 8.22pm. The person was pronounced dead at the scene, BTP has confirmed.

The tragic death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for a coroner ahead of an inquest opening. No sex or age of the person has been revealed by the force.

BTP said officers were currently working to establish the identity of the person and contact their next of kin. The force said officers were called to reports that a person had been hit by a train at the station on Park Lane, Congleton. No further details have been revealed.

The Manchester Evening News reported last night the incident led to lines being blocked in the area and trains cancelled.

Train operators said the incident happened between Macclesfield and Stoke-on-Trent and that Manchester trains were being affected.
