Tragedy after police and public battle to save man found in Cheetham Hill

A man found in north Manchester has died despite valiant efforts to save him, police have said. Officers were called to Cheetham Hill to a report of a 'concern for welfare' of a 60-year-old man shortly before 11:30am this morning.

Despite the best efforts of both members of the public, and emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene. There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man's death Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

A police cordon was in place at the scene for several hours into this afternoon (Sunday). A wooded area of a field bordered by Allesley Drive and Barrow Hill Road, close to Unity Community Primary School, in Cheetham Hill was taped off whilst an officer stood guard.

A private ambulance also later arrived at the scene.

One local resident said: "We woke up this morning and saw all the emergency service vehicles. There were four police cars and an ambulance.

"We didn't know what had happened but we knew it must be something very serious and we were very shocked."

Another said he woke to find emergency service vehicles "lining the street" on Barrow Hill Road on Sunday morning.

In a statement, GMP said: “At around 11:25am this morning (Sunday 9 October 2022), officers were called to a concern for welfare of a 60-year-old male in Cheetham Hill, Manchester.

"Officers and emergency services attended the scene.

"Despite the best efforts of the emergency services and members of the public, the male was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.”
