However, a poor transitional shot brought Wilson back to the table, and with a clearance of 35, was able to win it 65-63 and moved 3-0 in front. Wilson was halfway to winning the contest after breaks of 66 and 68 propelled the 31-year-old into a 5-0 lead. However, there were signs of a Carter revival, as breaks of 91 and 131 claimed the next two frames and gave Wilson plenty of food for thought.

The man from Colchester delivered a perfect response though, and a break of 54 in the eighth frame saw him end the afternoon session with a 6-2 lead. Carter refused to lie down and drew first blood in the evening session to reduce the deficit to 6-3 with a break of 61, with the 43-year-old having won three of the previous four frames at that point. Wilson was on the ropes again, but momentum looked to be shifting back in his favour when Carter made a mistake on red and left him with a chance to clear the table.
