Tottenham transfer required after Conte drives decision to ‘pull the plug’ on shaky star

Antonio Conte has seen all he needs to see from Pierluigi Gollini, with a report hinting a new Tottenham goalkeeper will be signed next season.

The Italian goalkeeper, 27, was signed to provide back-up to Hugo Lloris last summer. The Atalanta stopper arrived on an initial season-long loan, though Spurs do have an option to turn that deal permanent.

However, according to Football Insider, the decision has now been made to ignore that route.

The online outlet states Spurs boss Antinio Conte has ‘not been impressed’ to the level of wanting Gollini signed permanently.

A £13m option to buy was widely reported at the time of Gollini’s arrival. However, Football Insider claim that option is in fact an obligation.

Regardless, Gollini won’t reach the requisite number of appearances to turn the move permanent anyway. It’s stated 20 appearances would do the trick, but he only has 10 at present and won’t play again this season unless Lloris picks up an injury.

Gollini’s 10 outings have been spread across the cup competitions, with the Europa League providing six chances to shine.

However, the goalkeeper has seemingly not done enough to catch Conte’s eye and will be returned to Atalanta at season’s end.

That will leave Tottenham with a decision to make in the summer. Lloris signed a new contract in January that committed his future in north London to 2024.

The No1 role is wrapped up, but Spurs may be required to dip into the market for a reliable back-up.

The club do have a pair of 23-year-old stoppers on the books in the form of Alfie Whiteman and Brandon Austin.

However, they lack top level experience having made just a single senior Spurs appearance between them.
