Tottenham transfer news: 'Twists and turns' expected in race to sign Sven Botman

Transfer insider Dean Jones expects a number of clubs to show an interest in Lille defender Sven Botman in the summer transfer window, including Tottenham.

The 6 foot 5 centre-back has been linked with a move away from the Ligue 1 side in recent months, but remains at Lille for now.

Back in the summer, Wolves were keen on bringing the Dutchman to the Premier League. However, it was reported that they were unwilling to pay Botman’s £35m asking price, meaning that he stayed in France.

In January, another Premier League club made their move for Botman, with Newcastle believed to be very interested in him at the start of the window. They were unable to convince Lille to part ways with the 22-year-old, though, and now Tottenham are said to be monitoring the promising talent, with sporting director Fabio Paratici identifying him as a potential target.

Jones expects several clubs to be in the mix for Botman’s signature when the current campaign concludes, and he has claimed that Tottenham will have to show that they can match his ambitions if they want to beat off competition from other teams such as Newcastle.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “They’ve got to show their ambition in the coming months if they want to get him through the door.

“Ultimately, they know that there’s going to be other clubs linked with Botman between now and the end of the season as well. So, I think there’s still lots of twists and turns to come with that.”

There may be other clubs battling to sign Botman in the off-season, but from a domestic perspective, it seems that Newcastle could be Tottenham’s biggest competition for the defender.
