Contact made: Tottenham now move for 'one of the best players in the world' as chiefs fly abroad

Tottenham have reportedly made contact over a possible summer move for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Matheus Nunes.

Recently labelled by Pep Guardiola as ‘one of the best players in the world’, Nunes is 23 years of age and a full Portugal international.

Primarily a central midfielder who can play in defensive or attacking midfield roles, Nunes has made 86 appearances for Sporting after joining in 2020.

He has contributed to eight goals in 37 games in 2021/22 and recently turned out in a holding midfield role against Manchester City in the Champions League.

According to O Jogo last weekend, as relayed by Sport Witness, Spurs had scouts in attendance at Sporting’s game with FC Porto.

Sport Witness have now relayed an update from Record, suggesting that Spurs have ‘been in touch’ regarding Nunes. Tottenham have ‘expressed interest’ over a summer transfer, with Nunes reportedly having a €60m (£50m) release clause.

With Nunes under contract until 2026, you’d expect that Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici will need to trigger the midfielder’s £50m release clause to bring him to north London.

That would make Nunes the club’s second most expensive signing of all-time behind Tanguy Ndombele, and who knows, he could end up replacing the French midfielder in N17.

Ndombele is out on loan with Lyon, who have an option to make the move permanent in the summer for £54m. If they decide to activate that clause, Spurs could use those funds for Nunes, making a possible move one to watch ahead of Antonio Conte’s first full season in charge.
