Tottenham believe £27m star could be 'successful' away from Hotspur Way
Tottenham wouldn’t be shocked to see Steven Bergwijn leave the club this summer and go on to become a success elsewhere, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.
The winger struggled for opportunities under Antonio Conte last season and could return to Holland before the transfer window closes.
Bergwijn started the first three Premier League games in 2021-2022, but injuries, a lack of form and the January arrival of Dejan Kulusevski saw him start just one more league game for the remainder of the campaign.
He did feature in 15 of Spurs’ final 18 top-flight matches, but he was only used as a late substitute, often replacing the likes of Heung Min Son and Kulusevski to provide fresh legs.
In complete contrast, Bergwijn has been playing for Holland and has scored five times in his last seven international outings, including a recent stunner against Belgium.
Therefore, with the World Cup less than five months away, the 24-year-old wants to be playing regularly at club level to improve his chances of earning a place in Louis van Gaal’s squad and has expressed his desire to leave Tottenham, with Ajax still keen on his services.
Despite things not going to plan in north London, Bergwijn still has an impressive record for his country and has racked up 90 goal contributions at club level for PSV and Tottenham.
As a result, Bridge believes those inside the club wouldn’t be shocked to see the attacker go on and perform well in the future.
He told GIVEMESPORT: “He gets a few niggly injuries, but he’s a well-built bloke and there is a belief inside Tottenham that they won’t be totally surprised if he leaves the club and goes on to really be a success.”
