Toto Wolff: I couldn't wish for a better driver pairing than Hamilton & Russell

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has said that he could not wish for a better driver pairing in Formula 1 than the one he has with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

The Silver Arrows are having a bit of a tough period this season with them unable to challenge for race victories but, on paper, they still have one of the strongest driver line-ups on the grid and if and when the car improves both drivers should be able to deliver great results.

Indeed, Russell has come into the team and shown just how strong he is, with him the only man on the grid to finish inside the top 5 at every race so far in 2022, and Wolff says he is very pleased with what he has seen from the former Williams driver, and with the working relationship his two charges have developed:

“When you look at George’s track record in winning the title in F3, in his rookie year, and then in F2, we knew that he was very good.

“Then obviously the Williams school added its part, so we were never in any doubt that he would be very good.

“And you can see that it’s materialising on the track. I like his approach very much. He’s very rational, whether he is fastest in P2, or whether he’s eleventh, it’s just about applying the science and trying to make the car faster.

“I enjoy seeing them working together, the level is high from both of them.

“That has put us in a decent situation in the constructors’ championship, so I couldn’t wish for any better pairing.”

Russell has had a fine season so far and has coped really well with the struggles that the Mercedes team have had up until this point in the campaign.

He’ll be looking to keep that top run of top 5 finishes up this weekend, then, as F1 heads to the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.
