Toto Wolff hints at Mercedes tweaks for Miami Grand Prix

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has suggested that the team will be bringing tweaks to their W13 car this weekend as they bid to improve its performance.

Formula 1 is in Miami this weekend for the first-ever Grand Prix there, but it seems unlikely that Mercedes are going to be adding a new trophy to their cabinet at the end of it all.

Indeed, they’ve really struggled for performance so far this season, with Lewis Hamilton finding it tough in particular, thanks to porpoising hampering how they can set their car up.

They’ll have been working, and will be continuing to work, hard to solve the issues, though, and Wolff has suggested that there could be some changes being made for this weekend’s race in Miami, as well as at the Spanish Grand Prix later this month, which regularly sees teams bring upgrades every year.

On the potential changes, Wolff said:

“We’ll try something in Miami and then again in Barcelona.

“We had much less bouncing with our presentation model in the winter than the second specification that we then took to Bahrain. The data comparison between the two cars should bring us a step further.”

Perhaps, then, Wolff and the team are moving back to something we saw from them at the very early stages of winter testing, where it did not appear they had as many issues as they did now.

Whether that decision works or not remains to be seen, of course, but George Russell and Lewis Hamilton will both be hoping that progress is made with the car in the near future.

Hamilton has already ruled himself out of a title challenge this season, after failing to score points at Imola last time out, and so this campaign now may well be one where the team experiments a little bit and tries to make some development progress for the years
