Toto Wolff confident in W13 potential despite continuing issues

Toto Wolff has said that the Mercedes W13 car still has potential to be competitive, even if the team are still struggling to really get on top of it.

The Silver Arrows have been so used to dominating and winning for the best part of the last decade, seeing them unable to take victory this season has been a huge surprise.

The potential for that was always there with the new regulations, though, and now Mercedes are working hard to try and rectify the issues, with porpoising the thing hampering them most of all.

Indeed, that said, there’s cause for optimism for Mercedes fans as both drivers and Wolff, as well as other senior team members, have said that they feel as though the car has huge potential in terms of it being competitive – they just need to find a way of unlocking it at the moment.

Speaking recently, Wolff again said he felt that the car is sound in design, and if they can unlock the potential it has they will make great strides:

“We have been [struggling] straight from the beginning, flying in the fog a little bit,” said Wolff.

“And it is clear that there is potential in the car and she is fast but we just don’t understand how to unlock the potential.

“It is a car that is probably super-difficult to drive on the edge, dipping in and out of the performance window, more out than in, and dissecting the data with a scalpel is just a painful process because it takes a long time.”

Promising words, but just words all the same, of course, and Merc will not be content until they have found a resolution.

Make no mistake, though, the Brackley boys and girls will be working around the clock to solve things.
