Toto Wolff condemns hostile fans booing Max Verstappen at US Grand Prix

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says booing has no place in Formula 1 after Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez received a frosty welcome at an event for the US Grand Prix.

The Red Bull pair were met by a raft of boos from fans attending the event upon arrival because of the ongoing cost cap saga.

Red Bull was found to have exceeded the $145-million cost cap in the 2021 season that Verstappen won the Drivers' championship, a move that Wolff has labelled as cheating.

Despite his strong stance on the issue, he condemned fans booing Verstappen and Perez.

"That is unacceptable," the Mercedes boss told Sky Germany.

"The booing, whether it's on the podium or on the fan stage, nobody wants to see that. I think we (F1) have done a lot against this kind of behaviour. It is somewhat contained, and it doesn't belong here either. Something like that should not happen."

It wasn't the first time booing has made its way into F1 this season, either.

"It goes both ways. In Austria, it was against Lewis. Here (at the United States Grand Prix), it is massively against Max," Wolff said of the booing.

"We have to get everyone on the same page. We fight hard on and off the track, but we don't have that kind of hostility towards each other."
