'Top-class' Aston Villa transfer target told to leave Liverpool

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell says defender Joe Gomez "needs" to leave Liverpool for regular game time.

Aston Villa could be a possible destination with the Villans previously being linked with the defender.

The Reds, however, are said to be asking for a £30million fee.

The 24-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield, having played just 25 times in all competitions over the last two seasons.

And Campbell suggested it might just be the right time for Gomez to seal a switch.

"I think Gomez is going to have to leave," he told Football Insider.

"Let’s be honest, he is fourth choice centre-half at Liverpool right now. He needs to play football.

"If Liverpool don’t want to sell him then perhaps he will leave on loan.

"Gomez is a top-class player who is still young. He needs game time though. He really needs minutes.

"Injuries have not been good to him and that is why he finds himself down the pecking order.

"What he needs is regular game time and I worry that he is not going to get that at Liverpool."
