Tony Mowbray makes revelation on Blackburn Rovers man after recent speculation

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray says midfielder Joe Rothwell remains committed to the club, after recent speculation around his future.

Rothwell did not feature in Blackburn goalless draw at Luton on Saturday, with Mowbray revealing after the game that the midfielder had been left out, after expressing a desire to talk to other clubs.

That side was Rovers’ promotion rivals Bournemouth, who had several bids for the 27-year-old turned down, before it emerged early on deadline day that a deal would not be happening.

Now it seems that despite Rothwell’s interest in a potential move elsewhere in recent days, Mowbray is still confident that the midfielder can play a big role at Ewood Park in the next few months.

Providing an update on Rothwell’s future at the club after that recent uncertainty, the Blackburn boss was quoted by Lancs Live as saying: “I’ve had long chats with Joe. He knocked on my office door before 8am on Monday and told me he was ready.

“He knew he wasn’t going and he wants to commit everything to the club and will do that. It was a very mature conversation and huge credit to Joe.

“He’s a great lad Joe and as I said at the time, it is difficult and these are life-changing moments in footballers’ lives and he’s told me he’s going to give everything, he looked me in the eye and was very focused.

“He trained brilliantly that day and I’ve got no reason to think Joe Rothwell isn’t going to give us anything other than 100 per cent every time he is asked to pull on that shirt.”

So far this season, Rothwell has scored three goals and provided seven assists to help Rovers to second in the current Championship standings.
