Tony McEntee feels extra week should follow league finals after guiding Sligo to Division 4 glory

Tony McEntee relished the chance to take his Sligo team to Allianz League Division 4 final glory but feels that in the future an extra week of pre-championship preparation should be afforded to teams involved.

The Yeats County got the better of Wicklow in the fourth tier decider by a 2-10 to 0-14 scoreline at Croke Park on Saturday.

But they won't have long to revel in the victory as they head to Ruislip to face London in their Connacht championship quarter-final next Sunday.

McEntee said he "absolutely" saw the value of being involved in a league final but added that greater leeway could be given in terms of the scheduling.

"I think there should be a week extra between now and the championship but I see great value in playing the league final," the Sligo manager told RTÉ Sport.

"Because success and a trophy is important and an occasion like today in Croke Park is massive for the likes of Sligo.

"We don't get many occasions in Croke Park and we want to both respect Croke Park and respect the occasion.

"Therefore I think any day we get the opportunity to play in Croke Park, any day we get the opportunity to win in Croke Park and collect a trophy is something we certainly appreciate very much."

Despite the victory, McEntee felt his side didn't handle the difficult conditions at a rain-soaked Croke Park all that well in the early stages.

"Terrible conditions but I'm not sure we coped really well with the conditions," he said.

"I think maybe the occasion and what was going on out there today, we didn't adjust to it well at the start of the game.

"But once we got really settled at half-time we were much more dynamic the second half. We used our energy much more and we had much more pace in relation to the game.
