Tonbridge Angels manager Alan Dunne says his side’s ‘remarkable’ points tally shows how far they have come after being tipped for relegation

Manager Alan Dunne says Tonbridge’s points tally this season is remarkable.

Angels moved on to 57 points with two games to play after beating Salisbury 3-2 at Longmead last weekend.

They visit Farnborough in their final away match of the campaign on Saturday before finishing at home to Torquay.

In between, they take on Maidstone in the Kent Senior Cup final at Priestfield next Wednesday.

Jordon Thompson’s header and a Tom Leahy cracker put Tonbridge in charge against Salisbury, and Ethan Sutcliffe restored the two-goal advantage after the Whites replied.

Ex-Tonbridge loanee Nathan Odokenyero scored a second for Salisbury but Dunne’s men deserved the points.

“It’s another three points on the board and puts our total to 57 with six still to play for,” said Dunne, who has led Angels to 14th in National League South.

“One win gets us to 60 points, which would be remarkable for a team with a budget that’s bottom-three and a team that everyone said when I went there, why would you take the job, you must be mad, they’re going to get relegated.

“Other teams that had played them said they’re like an academy team but I like a challenge and I always take on a challenge.

“Sitting on 57 points with two games to play, it’s remarkable and shows how far we’ve come in a short period.”

Dunne wasn’t put off taking the job last September despite the relegation warnings.

The former Bromley assistant manager felt it was the right move as he accepted his first role as a No.1.

“Things happen for a reason,” said Dunne.

“I met Sophie (Purves, chairman) and we got on well, so sometimes you’ve got to go with your gut.

“I love a challenge, nothing ever comes easy to me, and it never will.

“I always take the difficult road and do things the hard way.
